This Is Why Yellowstone Has Been Called A “Nepo Babies Show”

As the series Yellowstone finally comes to an end, it has been deemed in some quarters as a hub for nepo babies.

In a day when the conversation about “nepo babies” has become so commonplace, Yellowstone is one show that is quite synonymous with the phenomenon. The term “nepo babies” was coined to refer to celebrities who have achieved their success having been born to similarly accomplished parents.

Fans tend to be quite dismissive of such stars, mostly because they feel that their achievements are not entirely merited. Denzel Washington’s son John David has been brutally honest about his experience living this reality.

The Tenet star explained the challenges of not being taken seriously because of who his father was. He revealed that at times in the past, he would be forced to lie about his identity in order to avoid this fate.

Thankfully, the younger Washington has managed to push past this barrier and become successful in his own right. Emma Watson, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie and Kiefer Sutherland have all also used their considerable talents to make fans forget that they came from illustrious families.

When a New York Magazine article referred to 2022 as “the year of nepo babies,” O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube’s son), Jamie Lee Curtis (daughter of actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis) and Lily Collins (Phil Collins’ daughter) all spoke up against the aspersion.

As the series Yellowstone finally comes to an end, it has been deemed in some quarters as a hub for “nepo babies.” Here is why.

Yellowstone Star Danny Huston Hails From A Talented Hollywood Family

Italian-born actor Danny Huston is one of the Yellowstone stars who cannot seemingly escape his heritage. In the series, he brings to life the character of Dan Jenkins, a wealthy businessman with political aspirations who finds himself embroiled in a high-stakes battle for control over the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Huston lasted the entirety of two seasons and 19 episodes of Yellowstone. Still, he delivered a performance on the show worthy of his own talents, as well as the rich ancestry that precedes him.

The actor hails from a remarkable lineage of artists and filmmakers who have made a significant impact on the silver screen. His father, John, was a legendary director and screenwriter whose contributions to the film industry include directing classics like The Maltese FalconThe Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Prizzi’s Honor.

The Treasure of Sierra Madre starred Danny Huston’s grandfather (John’s father, Walter), and he won an Oscar for the role. John would repeat the trick many years later, when he wrote and directed his daughter (Danny’s step-sister Anjelica) to an Oscar-winning role of her own, in Prizzi’s Honor.

Jen Landon And Eden Brolin From Yellowstone Are Also “Nepo Babies”

As well as Danny Huston, Jennifer Landon and Eden Brolin are two other stars from Yellowstone

who qualify for the basic definition of the term “nepo babies.” Jen is the daughter of the late legendary actor Michael Landon, and features in the Paramount Network series as a spirited and tough ranch hand known as Teeter.

She joined the show in the second episode of Season 3, and — as of January 2023 — had already gone on to feature in 26 more episodes. Jen’s father Michael was known mostly for his work on TV, having famously appeared on programs like BonanzaLittle House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven.

Eden Brolin carries an even more recognizable surname, at least with the very modern audiences. She is the daughter of Marvel star Josh Brolin, and the granddaughter of multiple Golden Globe Award and one-time Emmy Award winner James Brolin.

Eden plays a recurring character known as Mia in Yellowstone. Like Teeter, Mia is also hired as a ranch hand on the Yellowstone Dutton ranch.

Who Are The Other “Nepo Babies” In Yellowstone?

Two other Yellowstone stars who could be called “nepo babies” are Cole Hauser and Luke Peckinpah. The former’s Hollywood roots actually go farther back than any of his colleagues. He is the son of actor Wings Hauser, and filmmaker Cass Warner.

Cass herself is the granddaughter of Warner Bros. co-founder Harry Warner. She also started her own film production outfit, known as Warner Sisters. In Yellowstone, her son Cole plays the rugged and fiercely loyal ranch foreman Rip Wheeler.

The Santa Barbara-born star has been one of the regular faces throughout the series’ five-season run. As a matter of fact, he has appeared in every single episode of the show. Six final episodes of Yellowstone are anticipated in the second half of 2023, with the story of Rip expected to continue and conclude therein.

Like Jen Landon and Eden Brolin, Luke Peckinpah’s character in Yellowstone works as a hand on the titular ranch. His role is comparatively limited, however, as he has featured in only three episodes of the first season.

Luke is the nephew of renowned director Sam Peckinpah, who was known for directing iconic films such as The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs.
