Buckle up, Yellowstone fans. The Dutton family will have some major issues to deal with when the show returns for part 2 of season 5.

Apart from Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) potentially plotting to kill each other, John (Kevin Costner) must come to grips with the fact that the Yellowstone ranch might cost him his legacy. As fans saw in the midseason finale, a bacterial disease called brucellosis threatened to wipe out his cattle, forcing him to send the herd down to Texas. The move may not only put Beth and Rip (Cole Hauser) closer to a reunion with Jimmy down on the 6666 ranch but leasing the land could potentially bankrupt the Duttons as well.

Following the drama-packed mid-season 5 cliffhanger, fans are now wondering what’s next for the crew. Unfortunately, there will be no new Yellowstone episodes for quite a while, but the good news is that the show isn’t over yet — there’s still much more ahead.

Has a release date for episode 9 of Yellowstone season 5 been announced yet?

While we know the drama will end with season 5, fans will have to wait for months to see how the show wraps everything up.

After initial reports that Yellowstone would return with episode 9 of season 5 in the fall of 2023, Paramount Network recently shocked longtime fans with a major announcement. Due to the pause in production caused by the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the release of Yellowstone season 5, part 2 has now been pushed to November 2024.

But that wasn’t all the network revealed about the state of the Yellowstone franchise. Alongside the final episodes airing next year, two more spinoffs are officially in the works: 1944 and 2024.

“Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions – and, we’re just getting started,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios in an official statement. “On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon – thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”

While we know episode 9 of Yellowstone season 5 will be released in November 2024, there is no exact premiere date yet. That said, Paramount Network did drop a teaser (that was later taken down) to tide fans over.

Do we know how many episodes are in Yellowstone season 5, part 2?

Back in 2022, showrunner Taylor Sheridan told Variety that season 5 is comprised of 14 episodes, which Paramount Network split into two parts. Though he didn’t share more details at the time, viewers know that the first eight episodes of Yellowstone season 5 began airing at the end of 2022, concluding on January 1, 2023.

That would indicate that part 2 was originally designed to feature six episodes, but Taylor hinted to THR that there could be a lot more to watch than originally planned. “If I think it takes 10 episodes to wrap it up, they’ll give me 10,” he told the outlet. “It’ll be as long as it needs to be.”

Do we know if Kevin Costner will appear in part 2 of Yellowstone season 5?

While we know part 2 of Yellowstone‘s final season has been delayed, there is no official word on if Kevin Costner will appear in the final episodes. Although it was confirmed that the show would end with season 5, there have been no official details released about the cast for season 5, part 2, per Deadline.

Kevin confirmed his plans to leave the show when speaking during his divorce proceedings from ex-wife Christine Baumgartner in September. According to the actor, he decided to exit the drama after learning season 5 would be split in two, per People. He testified that he would be paid $12 million for each part of Yellowstone season 5, which was less than previous seasons. Kevin has also said he is focusing on his upcoming movies, Horizon: An American Saga and Horizon: An American Saga 2.

“I couldn’t help them anymore,” Kevin told THR about a sixth season. “We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than previous seasons, there were issues with the creative … we came up with a number, and they [Yellowstone] walked away. I’ve been told it’s a little disappointing that [it’s] the #1 show on TV [and] I’m not participating.”

On May 8, Puck News reported that the actor allegedly won’t commit to returning to season 5 of the show until he’s “comfortable with how his John Dutton character is written out of the franchise.” Per the outlet, Kevin wants to avoid meeting a similar fate to Patrick Dempsey and his character Derek Shepherd, who was killed off when the actor left Shonda Rhimes’ drama Grey’s Anatomy

To these reports, co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan responded that he doesn’t do that kind of storytelling. Speaking with THR, the show’s co-creator opened up about feeling “disappointed” to hear of Kevin’s decision to move on from Yellowstone.

“My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered,” Taylor said. “His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone. But once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting.”

He continued: “He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it. His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one.”

Deadline originally reported that Sheridan decided to conclude Yellowstone with the fifth season on February 6. According to the outlet, the decision was made after Kevin requested to film the remaining six episodes in one week. Sources told Deadline that Paramount Network “declined” his ask and were eyeing a new Yellowstone spin-off starring Matthew McConaughey instead, wrapping up the original series.

According to Puck News, the season 5, part 2 filming schedule is still up for debate, with show executives “suggesting anywhere from 30 days to 45 days of shooting” while Kevin’s team has countered with “a range from one week to three weeks.”

With all this in mind, it’s still up in the air as to if we’ve seen the last of John or not.
