Yellowstone Season 5’s Brutal Summer & Beth Fight Broken Down By Star

Yellowstone season 5 star Piper Perabo breaks down the incredible stuntwork in the brutal Summer Higgins and Beth Dutton after-dinner brawl.
Yellowstone season 5 star Piper Perabo recently broke down the behind-the-scenes details of the brutal brawl between Summer and Beth. Perabo stars as an animal rights activist thrown in prison following a protest raid planned by Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly). Yellowstone season 5 sees her pardoned from her term in prison by Governor John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and ordered to serve under house arrest on the Yellowstone ranch, much to Beth’s chagrin.
One night during dinner in Yellowstone season 5, episode 5, Summer criticizes the meal’s meat selection, instigating an argument with Beth. The two take their quarrel outside, where they get into a vicious fistfight, leaving both battered and bloodied in the grass. However, Beth steps away as the clear winner. In a recent interview with Variety, Perabo discussed how she filmed the scuffle with her co-star and detailed the difficulties involved with the well-choreographed stunt. Read what the actor said below:
Our stunt doubles choreographed with stunt coordinator. Then Kelly and I started to learn the fight — this is more than a month before we’re filming. As we learn it, our stunt coordinator will watch us to see what parts we would do well. If there was a part that he didn’t like, he would take it out and then he would re-choreograph. So even just learning it, and him creating a long fight that we can do — except for the hip toss, Kelly and I could do the whole fight.
So the rehearsal process is always the hardest part. It was such a victory to get to the night where we’re like, “I don’t care if it’s cold. I’m sorry you’re in a sundress, but we’re finally here.” It felt like such a victory. And she and I had been rehearsing it for so long and knew it so well that it was kind of fun to do it for people. As you can imagine, the crew of “Yellowstone” loves a fight, and certainly Summer and Beth.
It was still September, so with the lights up out on the cranes outside the big house where we fought there were bats in the lights and stuff like that. It’s very rural, so it was really fun. Gator’s cooking this jalapeno fried chicken thing he makes. Cole [Hauser] was there through most of it because Rip has to come out in the middle and tell us how stupid we look, so he’s sitting inside at the fireplace on John’s couch, living on the high hog while we’re out there working. But he’s always good for a laugh, and it’s nice to have him around. So in the end, although we’re kicking the living hell out of each other, it was so fun.
What’s Next for Summer in Season 5?
After the brawl, Beth appeared to show a modicum of respect for her vegan housemate. Although there is still animosity between them, Summer’s determination during the fight and her willingness to never back down from Beth has impacted how Beth perceives her. As season 5 continues, their bond can grow as Summer begins to understand the cowboy life’s nature, the Yellowstone ranch’s dynamics, and how important preserving the Yellowstone property is to John.
Summer and Beth find themselves at the opposite end of nearly every issue except John. Although their relationships with him differ significantly, they both care for him. Season 5, Episode 8 finds Summer informing Beth that her brother, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), has called a state assembly to request that proceedings be put in place to impeach his father and remove him from office. With John’s political career threatened, Summer and Beth can find themselves in a tentative truce as they both have a common enemy in Jamie.
However, Summer also finds herself in a unique position of influence with John. Although she informed John upon her release that their relationship was to be strictly professional, they quickly rejuvenated their romantic feelings for one another, culminating with a kiss at the State Fair. As pressure mounts from Market Equities, Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), and Jamie, Summer provides John with the emotional support he needs. When Yellowstone season 5 returns this summer, audiences will see how Summer affects the future of the Dutton family.
