Yellowstone Did a Lot of Things Right, But This Ruined Storyline? Not One of Them

The show failed to capitalize on one storyline.

When the first season of Yellowstone premiered on Paramount + in 2018, everyone was sure that the next genius show had arrived, as series creator Taylor Sheridan really tried to make the first outing of his project as good as possible. Fans were infatuated with the Dutton family, and the amount of intrigue and betrayal forced many critics to consider Yellowstone the successor to Game of Thrones.

However, with each new season, Yellowstone began to feel more banal and shallow, forcing people to describe it as a high-budget soap opera rather than the great crime show it once was. And the first half of Season 5 made things even worse.

A superfluous storyline

The last season of the show started with John Dutton finally winning the race and becoming the next governor of Montana, which made fans extremely happy, as the main hero of the story becoming a politician would have undoubtedly made the show fresh again.

However, nothing really changed after John secured such an important position, as he still lived on his ranch and cared more about his property than the people of Montana. Also, the writers failed to introduce any new political rivals for John other than his son Jamie, which is a huge missed opportunity.

Promising storyline ruined

With John becoming a full-time politician, the amount of interesting storylines involving him should have increased significantly, but the writers really failed to introduce a new dimension to the show, preferring to maintain their status quo instead of experimenting.

Fans are sure that the whole Governor Dutton storyline was thrown out the window by Yellowstone’s writing staff, which is one of the reasons why people began to hate the show earlier this year, lamenting how a once-promising project was degraded into a daytime soap because of Sheridan’s negligence.

Let’s hope that the upcoming second part of Season 5 will at least try to correct this grueling mistake by finally showing John doing something political.
