Lonesome Dove

This 1989 miniseries is an adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s acclaimed novel of the same name. Starring the like of Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, and Danny Glover, it’s something of a spiritual forebear to 1883, telling the tale of a duo of former Texas Rangers turned ranchers as they attempt to drive a herd of cattle from Texas to Montana.

Warrior

In 1883, Sam Elliott’s Shea is making for the West Coast, but this action-packed drama is already set there. Based on an original story by martial arts legend Bruce Lee, it tracks Ah Sahm, a Chinese immigrant in 1870s San Francisco who goes in search of his long-lost sister and along the way becomes a leader in an organized crime family.

The Duttons aren’t the only cowboy-types on Paramount+. This series, which recently debuted its second season, is based on CJ Box’s best-selling books about a Wyoming game warden and his family, who find themselves embroiled in drama and danger when a murder victim turns up on their doorstep.

Deadwood

Deadwood was once one of America’s most infamous pioneer towns, and this HBO favorite delves into all of dirt and danger of both sides of the law in one of the Old West’s deadliest places to live.

Godless

If the fiery, can-do spirit of 1883’s Elsa speaks to you, this Netflix series is sure to appeal. Starring Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery, as well as Jeff Daniels and Jack O’Connell it’s set in a quiet, Old West town where most of the men have been killed in accident, leaving the women, along with a few helping hands, to defend their town.
