Kevin Costner is embracing his love for the West, and not only in his role as John Dutton on Yellowstone. The History Channel has tapped everyone’s favorite on-screen cowboy for a new docuseries that takes a deep dive into the ‘Wild West.’ With the help of legendary biographer and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the actor will host and produce Kevin Costner’s The West.

According to the A&E press release, the eight-episode series hopes to “transcend the clichés and myths” about the American frontier and, from various perspectives,”capture the spirit of opportunity, adventure and peril through the diverse, complex characters and untold stories that defined the era and continue to shape our country today.” For anyone who watched him host Yellowstone: One-Fiftyit’s clear that there’s no one better suited for the job.

Costner has been churning out plenty of cowboy content this year despite rumors of Yellowstone ending after season 5. Along with hosting last year’s Yellowstone Park docuseries, the actor has been shooting a four-film Western epic, HorizonHis love for the West isn’t only tied to work. The actor owns a 160-acre ranch in Colorado where he and his wife got married back in ’04 (he pulled up in a horse-drawn carriage!).

This new series has special significance for Costner as it marks his return to The History Channel, the “home of [his] first foray into television with the Hatfields & McCoys.”

Costner explained why he’s drawn to these types of narratives in the A&E press release.

“I am in love with history. I love the rich, heroic, and harrowing stories of the West. The people and their stories have always held a fascination for me, but there’s an urgency today to put those times and the men and women who we think we know in perspective, in the context of their times, without judgment,” said Costner. He also expressed excitement to have the opportunity to work with Doris Goodwin, a sentiment sweetly matched by Goodwin herself.

“Kevin Costner’s body of work on the American West has defined him as one of the finest storytellers of this genre and of our time,” Goodwin said.

The announcement paints the picture of a series set on offering a nuanced and expansive view of the West as told through multilayered characters, historical archives, and distinguished expert interviews. It will explore the trailblazers, law enforcers, and bloody battles that marked this transformative period.

Hands up if you’re excited to see Costner take the reins on this one!
