Yellowstone fans have been given another worrying update following rumours about Hollywood star Kevin Costner leaving his iconic role after five seasons.

Taylor Sheridan’s hit Paramount Network drama has become one of the biggest US shows of the past decade, largely thanks to a stunning central performance from Kevin Costner as ruthless land owner, John Dutton.

Millions of fans are still waiting for the return of Yellowstone’s fifth season, which has now been rumoured to bring the Western series to an end.

Multiple sources have reportedly told The New York Post that the popular Paramount drama will end with the second half of season five.

Currently, it’s still unclear when the cast will even start filming the rest of the season, let alone when it will be released.

Sources believe Costner isn’t up for continuing the show following a dispute with Sheridan.

“It’s the same as with any showrunner and big star – there’s respect, but there’s friction,” a source close to production claimed to The New York Post.

Earlier this year, reports emerged that Costner had tried to significantly cut down his filming time on the second half of season five.

Now, another source has claimed Sheridan’s ego is also a major factor in Yellowstone’s current complications.

“Taylor is the star of his show,” they said. “He’s the most important person on all of his shows.”

Production could be further complicated by the impending Hollywood writers’ strike, despite actor Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, maintaining the cast are hoping to start shooting again in May.

Thankfully, the source added: “We’re hoping it will be worked out. It’s too big a show for things not to be worked out.

“Hopefully Kevin will return for the remaining episodes if everyone works together, but it looks like Yellowstone will end after this season.”

Currently, there has been no official statement as to the future of Yellowstone.

Express has reached out to Paramount and Costner’s reps for comment.

Paramount tried to dispel the rumours in February, shortly after the first half of season five aired.

The statement read: “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.

“Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built.”

Thankfully, the popular Western franchise is showing no signs of slowing down regardless of whether or not the flagship series will continue.

Prequel series 1923 is expected to return for a second season next year, and another spin-off set in 1944 is also in the works.

Yellowstone is available to stream on Paramount+.
