Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone Drama Explained

As John, Costner has played a key role in the Yellowstone story from the opening episode. Following the release of season 5 part 1 earlier this year, however, work on part 2 was delayed due to reported behind-the-scenes tensions. Costner, it is alleged, was demanding less filming time on the show in order to focus on his own upcoming epic Western, Horizon.

Yellowstone season 5 part 2 was supposed to release in September of this year, but these plans changed due to the reported stalemate between Costner and the production. With Costner’s Yellowstone contract having now officially ended and his exit from the show confirmed, Sheridan has said that the conclusion to John’s character arc will be “truncated“.

The Yellowstone season 5 part two scripts are not yet complete due to the ongoing WGA strike, but conversations have reportedly taken place regarding getting Costner back to shoot a few scenes to properly wrap up his character. It remains to be seen how the remaining episodes of Sheridan’s hit Western will conclude John’s character arc and the show storyline more generally, but a sequel series starring Matthew McConaughey has already been given the green light.
