A sequel series to Yellowstone has been confirmed following Kevin Costner’s sudden exit from the series, which will now end with season 5. It was previously reported that Costner would be leaving Yellowstone after season 5 following alleged disagreements between Costner and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan. It was later confirmed that Yellowstone season 5 will be the final season of the show.

Now, Deadline confirms that a sequel series after Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will follow the end of the popular neo-Western series. As reported previously, Matthew McConaughey is in talks to star in the sequel show. Some of the original cast of the flagship is also slated to return. The sequel series will run on Paramount Network and will be available to stream on Paramount+.

What Will A Yellowstone Sequel Look Like?

Reports that Yellowstone season 5 would end the series first appeared in February, which included information about a planned sequel starring McConaughey. However, Costner’s exit and the subsequent end of Yellowstone weren’t confirmed by Paramount until this week. Now that the news is official, it appears McConaughey will be the leading man for the franchise once Yellowstone season 5 comes to a close.

How a sequel gets presented will depend on the final fate of John Dutton when Yellowstone season 5 ends the series. Recently, John has faced threats of impeachment from Jamie, which could put his status as Governor of Montana in jeopardy. It’s possible the many crimes of the Dutton family become public knowledge, leading to John’s arrest and the takeover of Yellowstone Ranch by McConaughey’s character.

Since McConaughey would be a newcomer to the Yellowstone universe, it makes sense to use returning characters to ease audiences into the idea of McConaughey as the franchise’s new lead. It would also help continue the story of the Dutton family without John’s presence, as his kids may have to get used to the Ranch’s new leadership. While it’s unclear how Yellowstone season 5 will transition into a sequel series, the decision makes sense following Costner’s departure.
