Yellowstone may be ending, but there’s still a whole lot of Dutton story left to tell. Currently, Paramount+ is in the middle of exploring the family’s hardships in the 1920s, a time of drought, prohibition and recession for rural Montana. The first season of 1923 ended in February 2023 and left fans hanging in more ways than one. Multiple cliffhangers threatened to tear the whole family apart, and there’s still no update on when Season 2 might arrive. While we wait for that news, here’s everything we do know about what’s next for the 1920s Duttons.

‘1923’ Season 2 release date

TLDR: No date has been set, and we expect it will be a long time before we get any good news on that front.

THE DETAILS: Filming has not yet begun on Season 2, and Paramount has announced that both the back half of Yellowstone Season 5 and a new Yellowstone spinoff are scheduled premiere before the end of the year. That means the Dutton ranch (or Chief Joseph Ranch, as it’s called IRL) will be occupied for a while. We’ll update this post as soon as we get information, though.

‘1923’ Season 2 episode count

TLDR: Season 2 will consist of eight episodes, just like Season 1.

THE DETAILS: 1923 was conceived of as a limited series, but creator Taylor Sheridan realized he needed more space to tell the story in full. He reportedly has a two-season plan, so Season 2 will be the final season. Star Brandon Sklenar recently said as much, telling The Hollywood Reporter that even though there’s “a split in the middle,” the two seasons are “all one piece” and “will conclude”

‘1923’ cast

TLDR: Legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren lead the cast, and Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer are the breakout stars.

THE DETAILS: Here’s who was still standing at the end of Season 1.

  • Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, the uncle of Spencer and John I. Jacob came to the ranch after his brother James (Tim McGraw) died.
  • Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, Jacob’s wife. She raised her young nephews and runs the ranch when Jacob is injured and bedridden.
  • Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Duttonthe oldest nephew of Jacob and Cara and younger brother of John I. He was traumatized in WWI and left the ranch to work as a big game hunter in Africa. Now, he’s on his way back to rescue the ranch.
  • Julia Schlaepfer as Alex Dutton: An adventurous British woman who Spencer met in Africa. They got married on a ship as they began the journey to Montana.
  • Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, son of John I. He’s an excitable ranch hand who just got married to girlfriend Elizabeth and is mourning the deaths of his parents.
  • Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Dutton, Jack’s new wife. She’s getting used to ranch life, and just suffered a miscarriage.
  • Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, a young Indigenous woman who was forced into a government residential school, but is now on the run after escaping.
  • Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield, a sadistic business tycoon who is after the Duttons’ land.
  • Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, a local sheep herder who is in a battle with the Duttons for grazing space, and has now teamed with Whitfield.
  • Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis, the fiercely loyal foreman of the Dutton ranch.
  • Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud, the strict, terrifying priest who oversees Teonna’s school.
  • Michael Spears as Runs His Horse, Teonna’s father and a neighbor to the Duttons.

‘1923’ Season 1 recap

TLDR: Nothing is going well in the Duttons’ world.

THE DETAILS: At the end of Season 1, all of the Duttons were in some kind of trouble. Jacob was losing feeling in his hands, and he and Cara were facing off against the evil Donald Whitfield, who demands that property taxes on the ranch be paid to him before the end of the year. Both John Sr. and Emma died, and a drought threatened the ranch’s survival even without the new property tax issue. The family desperately needed a rescue from oldest nephew Spencer, but unfortunately things weren’t going so well for him either.

Halfway around the world, Spencer and Alex fell in love and got married by a ship’s captain. But after accidentally reuniting with Alex’s ex-fiancé, which led to Spencer being blamed for his death after the ex-fiancé fell off an ocean liner, their love story went sideways. Alex’s friend saved Spencer from a murder charge, but he still got carried away from the ship while Alex screamed after him. The only thing that offered a ray of hope was the fact that Alex still had the letters sent from the Duttons, which featured their address. Both Spencer and Alex now have to get to Montana on their own, somehow.

The only real piece of good news from the end of the season was that Teonna was able to reunite with her father, and he can now guide her to safety after she killed multiple abusive nuns in her escape from boarding school. She’s still being pursued by Father Renaud and a handful of police, but if anyone can keep her safe at this point, it’s her dad.
